SRAM PC-58 Question...

Help! Just replaced the chain on the bike and matched it up with the same amount of links on the original chain. I tried to give it a test ride but the chain kept skipping. What gives? Didn't have this problem with the original chain so I figured I mis-counted the chain links. So, I took of two links. Still had the problem. I took off another 2 links and the problem did not go away. The bike has approx. 1800 miles on it on the original chain was oiled regularly and cleaned. Help! This just killed my weekend.

Worn cassette and/or chainrings. Usually you replace the cassette with the chain.

What does your cassette look like? The chain and the cassette usually wear as one unit and oftentimes are replaced at the same time. It's possible that the cassette has worn to the point where it doesn't match up well with a new chain now.

I suggest you go to www.parkktool.com repair section and learn how to properly size a chain. You will have an even bigger problem if a too short chain causes the derailer to get ripped off.

When are we ever gonna get past this kind of lame advice. If a chain is replaced before it gets too worn the cassette will last thru many chains.Anyone replacing a chain ought to know how to measure one for wear too. All it takes is a ruler and the ability to measure a 1/16" elongation in a foot of chain tensioned. That much elongation is when it's time for a change and won't trash the casette. 1/8" will usually trash a casette. Pretty simple concept. Try and remember it.

Bikes: See sig.

Did you check the chain for stiff links? When you adjust a chain, there will be a stiff link where you re-inserted the rivet. Bend it back and forth at that place a little bit, it will loosen.

Providing that G4 used the power link that came with the chain, a stiff rivet shouldn't have caused the problem.

When the financial incentive to maintain the fiction evaporates. I don't see that happening any time soon, though.

I did use the silver power link that came witht the chain. I also checked to see if there were any kinks or stuck chain links as well. There was none. Funny thing is I didn't have this problem with the old chain. It only happens when I ride or actually put some weight on the pedals. The bike does shift well.

Went to Sheldon's Site and it sounds like the cassette is worn. Guess I'm making a trip to the LBS again. Thanks for the advice guys. Ride Hard.
