Flight Deck Mounting Problems

Note: Posted this over in the road forum, but figured maybe some of the mechanics may have experience messing with this type of thing even though its not such a mechanic topic.

So I admit, whenever I first purchased my bike I jumped the gun and with little research purchased a Shimano Flight Deck. I purchased the wired kit because I figured I really didn't need the wireless setup. Now weeks down the road I have my problem. The flight deck works great, but the mounting bracket sucks because it does not have a clamp for oversized bars. They make a 31.8mm bar-clamp for the wireless version, but it does not fit the wired version correctly(smart move Shimano). So now I am stuck with leaving my computer in an odd position on my bars which in turn reduces the real estate I have for my hands up top.

Has anybody else had this same problem and figured out an adequate fix? I would really like to position the computer directly over the stem, and if the plan required a lot of modification I wouldn't even mind placing the unit on the actual stem itself. I would much prefer that setup, but I don't know if I am going to get my way on this one.

Having to position the unit to the right, where the handle bar tapers down to the smaller diameter.

A better view of how the handle bar is tapered.

Maybe you could find a longer screw for the handlebar clamp?

In the past I did something that was ugly, but worked well. I sawed the bracket off of the mount. Then, using JB Weld, I glued the rest of the mount to the center of my stem. I never had a problem with it, it was just ugly. JB Weld is very strong (other epoxies would probably work). But, you'll never be able to move your computer to another bike, and if it breaks, you have to remove the epoxy from your bike, which will take the paint off with it.
