Changing aerobars and shifters with same cables?

Hi,

Is there a way to change my aerobars and bar end shifters without changing the cables? I was thinking of clipping the end caps off and re-routing it through the new shifters. Is that feasible?

The caps come off when you squeeze them back to a more circular shape using a crimper/pliers across the long dimension of the existing crimp.

If the cables were cut cleanly (like with cable cutters, not dull side-cutting pliers) they'll thread back through OK.

Then you can reuse the cable ends.

Obviously you'll need enough length for housing and cable. Housings are usually installed with just enough extra the bars turn all the way, and cables only have about an inch.

Might work but, unless you're luckier than me, I wouldn't bet on it. I always make sure that I've got replacement cables and housings on hand before doing any kind of handlebar or stem replacements. Less frustrating that way and it's something I know I'll use eventually anyway.
