It's a mechanic test they build into derailleurs. The test isn't whether you thread it wrong --- anybody can do that, and just about everybody has. The test is how long it takes you to figure it out afterward.

Actually the tab is more important on long cage derailleurs. Without the tab to keep it home, the chain wanders when slack, like when transporting with the wheel off, and can more easily get fouled on the cage.
