Broken Suntour axle question - 7spd Freewheel, GPX hub

My roommate broke the axle on his old suntour GPX hub. So I'm looking for a replacement axle.

I have someone tell me that I can just use any shimano axle to replace it (as long as its the right length) and someone else tell me that Suntour used a different thread pitch.

Can someone clairfy what is true?

For a Suntour 7 spd. freewheel hub you probably want a M10x1.0 thread (you can go to a hardware store and get a nut to check) with a 136 mm length (might also have a keyway for one of the spacers). A good shop should have this or be able to order.

jemoryl is right, Suntour uses a differnet thread, so a Shimano axle will not work.

Suntour GPX hubs were made by a different corporation than the "Suntour" of today. Sourcing a Suntour axle may prove a bit difficult, BUT ....

Wheels Manufacturing make all this sort of stuff. They'll have a Suntour compatible axle for ya. Your LBS should be able to order it in.

Go to an old packrat bikeshop, and offer to go through their bins of old greasy axles. Or find a co-op.

That one should work. Only one caveat: my Suntour hub axles have have a keyway (a slot cut parallel to the long axis) to accept a small washer/spacer with a tab. If you use an axle without the keyway you will need to modify or replace the washer. BTW, when I went to buy an axle at a big shop they rummaged around in a junk drawer, found a (new or like-new) axle and gave it to me...
