Shimano 105 (5800) Rear shifting issues

My girlfriends bike just starting having issues shifting the rear derailleur. It will not shift into the smallest two gears. This came on all of a sudden. I checked out the cable and redid the tension, and still will not shift from the larger gears back down to the #12 and #11. I take the cable off, and the chain goes to the #11 like it should. When holding the cable in my hand and pulling it, I can only get the shifter to click 9 times, and its an 11 speed. The bike is less than two years old and has appox. 5000 miles on it. It seems to me that the shifter is broken. Has anyone else had this happen or any thoughts? Thanks

You should have one click less than the number of gears. 9 clicks out of an 11-speed would indeed indicate that something is wrong with the shifter. Try giving it a good blast with WD-40 or similar inside.

Slide the cable partially out of the shifter and make sure it's not frayed and hanging up.

Also take bar tape off and check outer cable is seated firmly in shifter and the cable hasn't burst through the ferrule.

Well I got 10 of the 11 gears working but I knew something was not right with the shifter. I ordered a new shifter and cables. She rode it twice before I fixed it and on the second ride, the cable snapped. When I removed the shifter, metal parts fell out. I was surprised that the 105 broke in less than 2 years and 5000 miles. Trek's internal routing for the wires is a pain.

There are some tricks to swapping out internal cables.

Google it next time.
