need help modifying old bike from road to flat handlebar
Hello guys
I have a cannondale CAD2 r200 (yes, very old).
I would like to modify the handlebar to a flat one.
i got everything i need to make it happen except for the shifters....
they currently have 2X7, and i would like trigger shifters.
i can't seem to find any 2X7 trigger shifters. so i was thinking, would it be possible to take a 7 speed shifter of type A and a 2 speed shifter of type B (mix gears of different makes or type)
(for exe: Buy SRAM X5 MTB Trigger Shifter Lever at Tredz Bikes. £15.00 with free UK delivery )
or i have to replace the gears??
in which case i have no idae what to get and i guess it would cost a lot.
my budget is as cheap as possible but without breaking down after 6 months.
thank you

You would need a compatible RD for use with the SRAM X5 shifter listed, the cable pull on the SRAM x series differs form
Shimano of the same era. SRAM made Attack series shifters for Shimano type cable pulls. Dunnoh about work arounds.

In addition to the SRAM vs Shimano incompatibility-
Shimano FRONT "road" shifters & "mountain" shifters have incompatibility problems.
You'll need something like a FD-R443 or 453 (numbers off the top of my head) to use "mountain" shifters with a "road" crank.
The really simple solution is to just use a friction front shifters.
With just 2 rings, you basically have "binary" shifting anyway and a friction shifter would give infinite trim between the 2 rings.
This is assuming you have a Shimano RDER.
You didn't specify and I have no idea what an "old" bike used.

From: dusk 'til dawn.
Bikes: everywhere
I shifted road double with a MTB triple trigger. Not the smoothest operation, but it worked. Cable was extremely slack when in little ring, as can be seen in this pic.

Had to run that MTB FD pretty high with that 53T non-round big ring.

the front is a shimano RX100.
I think the friction shifters for the front could be a good idea, as i barely use the front cassette.
but what about the rear derailleur? could i get a compatible trigger shifter to use with my current rear derailleur?
i'm worried that after all the trouble of getting the parts and working all the time it won't work smoothly.
I saw a video:
would getting the same shifters work?
he used Shimano EF51.
of course it would be for the rear derailleur.
