Chains, what's the difference?

Hi guys,

I am currently looking for a gold chain for an old 6 speed I have and I am having some really serious trouble finding one. This is for a classic touring Fuji bicycle (with suntour cycle components) and I thought that all speeds 5-7 were pretty much the same spatially. (1/2" - 3/32")
I want to know what the difference is between the X1 gold (for track/fixies/bmx) and the X8-99 (for touring) chains. I can see that the pin sizes are a little different but would that really make a big difference?

Basically I want to know if I can use an X1 gold chain on my setup.

Thanks and here are the links for the X1 and X8-99

Thanks.

I use the silver KMC 8.99 chain on a lot of my builds. It works great with 6 or 7 speed drive trains. It is sweet! I've never seen a gold version of it. Be good. Have fun.

The X-1 is meant for fixes and single speeds and would not be a good choice.

So does this mean that the X1 will not work for an old 6 speed or that it is not optimized for it?
At this point I would like to know why the X1 chain is classified for fixies/track bikes when it's dimensions are the same as those for touring chains (X8-99). Thanks and any info is very much appreciated.

1 speed chains (single speed ones) will not work with multi speed systems. Both outer and inner (roller) width differ - it's wider.

I wrote about chain compatibility in this article:
