How wide of a tire can these rims fit?

I got a set of Velocity Aerohead 700c wheels:
Velocity Wheels - Hand Made in USA

and I am trying to get the widest tires I can on them, how wide of a tire do you think I can safely fit? I was hoping to get a set of delta cruisers, but I think 38 is the narrowest they come in.

Bikes: too many bikes from 1967 10s (5x2)Frejus to a Sumitomo Ti/Chorus aluminum 10s (10x2), plus one non-susp mtn bike I use as my commuter

Search "bicycle tire vs. rim width" and you'll find charts showing guidelines. Feel free to go wider than the suggested max. There's plenty of room on the wide side, with the only issue being that wider tires will wallow in turns at low pressure.

One caveat, not related to the rim, is that there can be clearance issues with cantilever brakes, because the shoes arc upward as they open.

While your mileage may vary, I am actually running 2.1" (52mm) wide WTB Velociraptors on Matrix Mt Titan 19.4mm wide rims. They have been solid, but some of that could be how tight the fit is with the rim (rim diameter vs tire diameter). In my experience, the tighter the fit the better they seat. I'm always a little leary of tires that almost fall on or off a rim.

John

Edit Added: 19.4mm is outside width, inside width is around 13mm.

Bikes: Bianchi San Mateo and a few others

Your rims have a 14.4 mm internal width. According to the ETRTO* chart that FB mentioned, a 15 mm rim should comfortably fit tires in the 23-32 mm range. Those charts are generally regarded to be conservative, but if you're looking at tires whose smallest size is 38 mm, you might be going fatter on those rims than I personally would.

Also... Are you sure you have sufficient frame & fork clearance for fat tires?

* ETRTO = European Tyre and Rim Technical Organisation. Their tire/rim width chart is published in a number of places, including Schwalbe's web site.

Is 50 to 60mm too wide? Truthfully, I'd have no issue running tires that wide on those rims. I've been using that wide a tire on mountain bike rims as narrow as the Aeroheads for decades without issue. The charts that others have mentioned are not only conservative, they are Freedom Caucus conservative
