Claris 2403 Shift/Trimming

I just installed a set of these shifters on my wife's bike to replace 2303 shifters since she was having a tough time downshifting from the large chainring with the thumb release.

I think I understand how the shifting works, but since I'm asking a 1:00 am, I just want to make sure. The Claris shifters have 5 positions/4 clicks. But maybe it is honked up.

There seems to be 2 positions for the middle chainring. Shifting from small to middle by pushing the lever completely leaves the FD in the outer middle chainring position, an inward trim available.

Shifting to the large ring is the same and there is an inward trim available.

Downshifting, lever pushed completely, to the middle ring places the FD in the inward trim position and requires an outward trim to run the small cogs. Which is different FD location than the upshift. Is this correct?

Everything shifts smoothly and cage has clearance and cable tension is good.

Thanks for any info.
