Does 3x7 work on a 3x6

So I found some 3x7 shift gears, my bike got 6 rear speeds, will that work?

More details are needed, but if friction shifting it probably will work.

It should work. Even with index shifting you can set the stops on the derailleur and use on 6 shifts of the shifter.

If you do this I would advise that you set it up so that the unused click slackens the wire while in the small cog, rather than pull against the stop on the large cog. In this way if you forget and try the unused shift it will slacken the wire rather than risk jamming the mechanism by trying to pull against the stop.

that's a great idea and with a triple up front the small cog shouldn't be missed.

This is also the way that I set up a triple shifter when used on a double, so that the wire slackens while on the small ring rather than trying to fight the stop while on the big one.

Nope, 6- and 7-speed have different enough spacing that you won't get the indexing to work. There's far more to it than having the right number of clicks!

6 speed cogs are spaced 5.5mm apart.
7 speed cogs are spaced 5.0mm apart.

There was a 6 speed Suntour Ultra with 5.0mm spacing, but you are unlikely to have that.
