Deore XT front shifter wont shift to large ring
Hi
I have a problem with my front shifter i have to keep pressing lever many times untill it shift to large ring seems to be worse in cold conditions i have lived with this for past year as i got used to it. Its not a cable problem as i have changed cable retuned gears etc in past. The lever does nothing when pressing then it sudderly work after like 10 trys or so and gets better once once warmed up??.
I thinking just buy new shifter but not 100 % sure its the shifter could it be the mech? Bike shift fine from small to middle.
Im selling bike soon so like get this fixed for new owner
Any advise be great thanks in advance

Bikes: Too many. Giant Trance X 29, Surly Midnight Special get the most time.
Sometimes the grease in shifters gets gummed up and keeps the pawls from catching in the shifter. Try flushing your shifter with a degreaser that leaves no residue or with something like wd40 while shifting to free up the pawls and then relubricate, preferably with an oil of medium viscosity that can cover all the mechanisms but then stay there.

with trigger shifters, the tiny screw to take off the cover plate can sometimes be underneath, but once off, it should expose some of the innards and allow better spraying of stuff inside to clear out the gummed up grease. You may or may not be able to see the mechanism with the cover off.
I suggest looking up a diagram of your shifter model, it will make it easier to see how to remove cover.
oh, and you may need a tiny set of screwdrivers as the heads are often small with shifter cover screws.

YOu often have to loosen the shifter and rotate around the bar to get the best access. If the brake is separate you often have to loosen this too to allow the shifter to move.
