In which case it would not record mileage, which is what the OP is wanting.

Just put a piece of tape or a rubber cap over the display to hide it while riding and read the final mileage when you finish the ride. Perfect fix at no additional expense.

Yes, I used to have one as well. They are quiet and of course very reliable. Still available, search for "Multito" on ebay or Google.
