Odometer only
OK so I got a bike computer-- odo, dist, time etc etc. I find myself looking down at the darned thing all the time. Is there such a thing as just an odometer to mount down on the fork to track cumulative dist only? That's all I'm interested in.

Turn it upside down for now.
There are or there where odometers like you want available at one time. Check ebay |
Old. mechanical , it went tick tick as each wheel rotation turned the internal clock works ,
to eventually add another mile on the display.. Electronic? you are too late there were fork blade mounted bike computers , but that was 30 years ago.. they were wireless by virtue of the sensor in the case was placed close to the wheel magnet. Now its up to you to create your own mount adaptation ... it is possible.. 1 relocation possibility https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon....7L._SY355_.jpg I have an 80s German, Ciclomaster it had a fork blade mount and the magnet sensor in the case , bought 30+ years ago, the mount is sitting between the cantilever brake and the low rider rack on the right fork blade. it's 1 line display is such that I take it off it's mount to read it... It does have more functions but trip mile and total were what I used.. .... |
I have an old Huret Sachs fork mounted odo like you're looking for. It's 33 yrs old--same as the bike it's attached to. It uses a small belt to drive it so there's no tick tick tick like the Schwinn odo I had before on my other bikes. Good luck finding one.

I've trained myself to not touch the buttons while I'm riding. Just leave it on ODO mode. Or clock mode sometimes on longer days.
|
You can also run some kind of ride tracker on your phone, and just leave the phone in the backpack.
|
Or you could just put a small piece of masking tape on until you train yourself not to stare at it all the time.

This thread was probably meant as a joke. If not :twitchy: the tape over the computer and/or the phone in the pocket seem simpler than tracking down some retro gadget.

Obviously the cheaper the unit you buy the less features it has, then just use the function you want. When I mean cheaper I mean a good brand but their bottom of the range, look around some older LBS see if they still have some old stock left, the newer ones have far too many features & to me the displays are small, you might try posting your question under the other heading below, these tends to cover all those questions you ask.

FWIW -- There is a USB charger (forumslader) that has a memory chip to keep track of the number of wheel revolutions. It can be read via a smartphone app.

Strava (or other app) on your phone in your pocket.

If you find a solution you should post yourself on the business intersection in your city and shout it loudly to all cars passing by... Careful though, you might get hit. |
On my first loaded tour I had a similar problem -- mostly because that low speed number was pretty depressing. My computer had an option to show either speed or cadence and one other datum. Within a week I had it on cadence (because that really doesn't matter except on steep climbs, and because it's pretty boring) and trip odometer (which helped a lot with following directions.) You might try something similar.

My pre electronic era mileage gauge consisted of a bunch of county maps and one of these: https://www.amazon.com/MagiDeal-Meas...YFR0KAH1NGQ9W7
I note there are now digital variants on this device. For longer rides you had to keep track of the number of revolutions manually, the horror! |
Roads have mile marker signs, along them ...

Just ride in the dark. :)

Wow - the OP requested a specific solution to his complaint, said solution exists, and it can be easily acquired at a reasonable cost. Are you all that bored?

Another option is to just take off the bike computer and use a free cell phone app (Strava, MapMyRide, etc). That's what I would do and still have an old Cat Eye computer gathering dust in the basement. I honestly haven't bothered other than calc two or three commutes once and just add them up as needed. I repeat them so much cyclecommuting that I know what the distances are.

Are we becoming a nation of Zombies??..... The Days of the Peddling Dead. What would we do without our devices? The dilemma is; if you have your smart phone AND your milage calculator mounted on your handlebars which do you watch??? I'd watch to road. :foo::lol: (Emojies I try to stay away from them, but this time there is a fit.) Without the Lion the Serengeti would be over populated with Wildebeest....... |
