What chain should be used

I have a very old stump jumper and am changing the crankset to a newer 10 speed deore crankset because I have one laying around. The rear wheel is a 7 speed freewheel. If I am using this combination, what chain should I use for best shifting performance? I thought that I read that a 10 speed chain will work fine with the 7 speed cassette but would the 7 speed chain work well with the 10 speed crankset.

Bikes: '96 Litespeed Catalyst, '05 Litespeed Firenze, '06 Litespeed Tuscany, '20 Surly Midnight Special, All are 3x10. It is hilly around here!

The 10-speed crank will work a lot better with a 10-speed chain and the 7-speed cassette will be perfectly happy with it too.

I don/t think I went that way. I've always used an older crankset and newer cassette.

Do you still have the older 6/7/8 speed chain? I'd try it with your new crankset. If it seems to work fine, then just get a new 6/7/8 speed chain, and you'll be fine.

Personally I've chosen to primarily stock 9 & 11 speed chains. I did get some Shimano 8s HG chains by mistake, and am chewing through them. However, I might use a 9s chain if it was available. or a quality 6/7/8 chain if I had it.
