Hey guys,

I've had this issue for quiet some time now and dont know what to make of it. There is a very noticeable grind coming from my back wheel/freehub in certain gears (usually towards lower gears). Ive spoken to my LBS (who i trust very much) and they were puzzled as well. Cassette and chain were recently replaced and still does the same. Freehub was also replaced back in November. It did it prior to it being replaced as well (replaced due to a crack in the freehub body).

What is that around the wheel hub? Banging sound almost seems in time to rotation

the grind noise does appear in time for the rotation. Thats what I dont understand where it is coming from.

You did not say what is around the wheel hub. It's difficult to diagnose remotely, and I can't imagine a shop not being able to diagnose such a problem. On the other hand any shop that replaces a chain or freehub for such a problem is questionable. As the sound stopped when you stopped pedaling it does not seem like it could be the rim. I'm wondering if there's something loose inside the hub. What happens if you (carefully) grab the rim while the wheel is coasting, or manually move the wheel forward and back abruptly with your hand?

This is what I'm imagining without much context from that video.

There is more pressure being put onto the drivetrain on the lower gears- which is when the sound is most apparent. As well, it appears the sound comes at specific intervals. So, I think it's the crankset/bottombracket. It would make sense- but obviously, if you could have the bike facing down and on a trainer -shifting up and down the cassette- that would be more ideal to diagnosing it. On another note I have never heard a sound that heavy relating to just the backwheel and its cassette.

Those became my thoughts too. If it was a bearing or housing issue It might become more audible while pedaling with the added tension placed on them. Such a thing can vary with a different gear options, more or less. Until the problem worsens, the noise might become consistent.
But, your hub was replaced. If it was done by a good mech its likely they would catch a bad bearing if they took the extra few seconds to inspect everything before reassembly. Stranger things happen I suppose.

It has to be the hub. If your cassette and chain were replaced and the noise persists, and the alignment of the derailleur is good, then the only remaining factor is the hub. What else is there?

I have experienced noises that seemed to be coming from one location, but they were coming from elsewhere. But what else could it possibly be?

Ask the shop to try substituting another rear wheel.
