BB spindle length

thanks for the info, appreciated. I put the old Exage crank back on and measured a chain-line of 44.5mm to center chaining, so it's presumably too far in . I will do more measuring once the SRAM cranks arrive.
Shifter are SRAM X3 and FD is a high mount X7 clamp-on.
thanks,

I went through some of your frustrations. For me it was trial and error. I got lucky and succeeded on the second try.

yeah I know it's funny , buying first then measuring, but I haven't bought a BB yet. the position of the new cranks will tell me exactly what length of BB I need, so I will not be sending anything back. I noticed today the Exage cranks are bent, the chain ring oscillates in and out by about 1/4" , so it's not like I'm wasting money.
for me this whole mt. bike build was a mess from day one, never had a bike fight me like this one. Tried to "save money " about 10 years ago by pulling all the 7-speed components off an early 90's cracked frame and moved to a new frame to be frugal and "not wasteful". I think the bike will finally be 100% right after I throw all that old stuff away . Lesson learned , buy and use everything from the same decade at least , salvaging old bikes will cost you ten times more than you save.

just a quick wrap-up, the SRAM cranks work OK on the 123mm JSS spindle. A little too far out, Center ring is at 50mm instead of 47.5, but the FD derailuer works now on all 3 positions and rings, neither stop-screw is bottomed out or backed out completely. I will get the 118mm BB spindle at some point down the road.
The SRAM manual for these cranks is correct under the square-taper section, bottom right corner of diagram. Calling for a 113mm spindle with 2.5mm spacer on drive side. Equivalent to 118 mm overall length. Hooray for SRAM

Now to just get the rear hanger re-aligned
