Peeling frame protector tape -- how to remove?
I'm building up a 1999 Trek 520 touring frame into a gravel grinder. The other day, I noticed something I hadn't realized before -- the frame has clear protector tape on the underside of the down tube, the insides of the forks and the undersides of the chainstays. Unfortunately, the tape has started to flake and peel. Has anyone else ever tried to remove this stuff, and if so, what's the best way to go about it without screwing up the underlying paint job? Thanks in advance for your advice!

Heat/warmth is your friend. Then solvents with mild Go Be Gone first advancing to stronger stuff if needed. Time spent wet with solvent helps. Andy

If you find yourself damaging the paint then it might be best to neatly trim the damaged tape back to where it is still sticking and call it a day, or overlay it with new.

Andrew is correct. Heat gun or hair dryer is very helpfull. Then a solvent for glue leftovers. WD40 is a good goo remover. But as stated careful and watch the paint. It can be tricky but usually not an issue. I had a cx bike with the same tape you referred to on the bottom of the down tube. It was lookin ragged so I removed. I will be honest and was cheap and didn’t replace. That was a mistake, replace the protective tape.
