Gash in tyre: vandalism or innocent tech failure?

The other morning I came down to unlock my bike in the shared hallway of my apartment building and found that the tyre was flat, when it hadn't been the day before when I locked it up. There was a gash a bit over 1cm long in the inner tube and another slit, of about the same length, in the tyre itself. The only explanation I can think of for this is that someone deliberately slashed my tyre but, before I start accusing people, I would like to know whether some kind of innocent technical failure could have produced the same result. Can anyone think of a plausible explanation that doesn't involve people being bad?

A 1 cm slit in (both tire and) tube would vent the tube past rideable conditions near instantly.
If you managed to slit the tire only through riding, and the tube failed by itself later, that kind of event tends to (but doesn't have to) lead to the tube ripping instead of leaving a neat slit.
So I gotta say that my first guess goes to "people being bad".

Thanks for the reply. I was trying to make an effort not to be so suspicious, but it looks like this time it's justified

Clean cut?

If the cut was with surgical precision as they say, has to be a human

can you post a pic?

Certainly seems that it was a result of a deliberate act. But I wouldn't rule out the slight possibility that you ran over a sharp object that slit the tire resulting in the tube failing later after you locked up the bike.

Not clear to me what you have to gain by making accusations, especially if there are multiple suspects. Our daughter's bike had a similar incident while at her school, but it was on both tires so even clearer that it was vandalism. I patched them up and we had no further incidents.

The cut on the inner tube is very straight and clean. Unfortunately I'm not allowed to post a picture because I haven't yet made enough posts on this forum.

The gash was in the side of the tyre, not the part that is in contact with the road surface.

I was able to warn a neighbour just now to look after his bike because of the vandal. I wouldn't have wanted to do that until I was really sure that malice was to blame.
