Bridgestone BB1 - seat post? - Resolved!!!
 

Hi all - new-be here

I got this Bridgestone BB1 for $15. Ties held air, gears worked good enough - a lot of dirt and some rust. Fine Except for the seat which was a messed up ragg - could not figure out why it was just stuck into what I thought was a stuck seat post... nope - there is no seat post - And now I come to understand that some (all?) of the Bridgestone bikes had a quill seat post?

I measured across the opening and its about 22 mm - Per https://www.sheldonbrown.com/seatpost-sizes.html - the CB -1 (apparently similar bike) was 26.2

What are my options at this point? If I tried to find a quill seat post for it which size do I need ?

Your bike has a seatpost, or at least what's left of one. That stub sticking up above the seatpost clamp is the remains of a conventional seatpost minus the saddle clamp. Loosen the clamp bolt and try to remove the stub. Hopefully it isn't corroded in place too badly. Use a pipe wrench or Vise-Grips to try to rotate it and pull it out. If it is badly stuck do a search for "stuck seatposts" and you will find a lot of possible removal techniques.

You do not have a "quill" seatpost or anything else, just a normal style and when/if you remove the stub, the proper diameter should be engraved on it.

That looks like a fubar to me. I can't tell for sure from the picture but it looks to me like somebody didn't know how to work the seat post QR and put a seat post in there that has eventually slipped down the seat tube.

If I'm right AND you can get the old seat post out, that's a pretty easy fix. The trick will be getting the old one out non destructively.

BTW - what is "ATF acetone" is it different than this?:

ATF acetone is a 50/50 mix of Automatic Transmission Fluid and Acetone. One of the best penetrating concoctions for breaking free stuck/corroded metal parts. "Kano Kroil Oil" is another option and probably less expensive if you don't have the other two products on hand. There is/was a seller on Ebay selling little 1oz. bottles of Kroil for cheap. I've had one for about 10 years and it's still 3/4 full. A little goes a long way.

The effort to to remove it will make you want to buy another seat post ... got a pipe wrench? you need a handle..

remove BB turn bike upside down and pour your chemical in from underneath ..

Well thanks to all this knowledge I got it out! Took me a little effort , long adjustable pliers, some liquid wrench and it came out

Funny piece of pipe in there - no taper - perhaps some home brew fix in the past? Now I just need to get over to the Co-Op and get a post that fits.

The truth is probably closer to your second-to-last picture. It's likely that the seatpost was damaged or otherwise forced at some point, leaving the body of the post in place, but the head gone.

Exactly. Many inexpensive seatposts have the saddle clamp assembly as a separate piece that's press fit into the shaft. Apparently that's where the OP's separated. Bob's picture is of a different design and not what was in the OP's bike.

Whew... You got lucky.
My son had a post stuck in a steel Fuji and it had to be cut from the inside to get it out. The frame was ruined in the process.

Which means it wasn't done right. I've had one aluminum seat post stuck in a steel seat tube that required this. Judicious use of a HAND hack saw blade in a stub handle cut through the post with no damage to the tube.

Granted, not relevant to the OP's issue, just pointing out that such a procedure IS an option, if desperately needed and if done right.

My Bridgestone BB-1 has a 26.2mm seatpost. Old thread, yes, but maybe someone new will be looking for this knowledge one day.
