Pretty Sweet Looking.

Perhaps better suited for the C&V subforum.

They're only showing a front hub, and not a rear. It is interesting how technology has evolved over the years.

Modernizing old designs.

Bikes: More bikes than riders

Thanks for posting. It's neat to see this really old stuff -- especially when modern parts haven't strayed all that far, at least in terms of design theory. I think we can certainly say that metallurgy and production processes are much better today, though!

That's pretty advanced for the day. Am I the only one that was expecting to see something on a brew pub?

Old Hub?

Click on the red dot to get the title changed, or to get the topic moved (C&V?)

To me it's a mix of human lack of understanding history and current marketing madness that combine to make us think that all we read as new has never been done before. Bicycle Retailer And News use to have a patent history article in each issue. You could see the original patent for an anatomical saddle, back in 1890 whatever. Yet in 1977 (or so) when Avocet introduced their saddles so many people thought this was a new design. Index shifting, clipless pedals, freehub bodied rear hubs, suspension and so many more "recent improvements" are really only rehashing old stuff. All be it with current materials and manufacturing methods.

For your grins and giggles here's a 10 best and worst inventions list I wrote up about 20+ years ago. Much of it is still valid. Andy

I have wondered if patents are actually creating a 20 or 30 year delay between introduction of a cycling product and distribution of the product.

As far as I can tell, Dual Pivot brakes hit several brands almost simultaneously, and almost exactly at the time one might expect the Altenburger Synchron patents to have expired.

Cassettes also appeared across several brands at about the time the Bayliss Wiley patents would have expired (plus a few years).

Shimano is well known for having a patent research department. They have used previously invented designs from many sources including SunTour. For a glimpse into how systems are designed over the years by rivals check out "The Dancing Chain" by Frank Berto. Andy
