Help with gear wire end
 

Hi

I want to change my gear wire, but can't seem to loosen the end on the handle. I've seen countless videoes, but none seem to have the same cable management. I hope someone here could help me.

I have a Concorde Prelude 500 with Shimano Tiagra gear system (no model number). Beneath you can see pictures of the gear handle and the loose end. I can see the end when i hold in break and gear up at the same time.

Unwind the broken strands to get them out of the way, and straighten the cable with pliers.

Make sure that it's shifted into highest gear position, and push straight in on the cable with pliers.

The other ends of the broken strands are probably making it difficult.

Common problem and why many replace shift cables once a year.

It is good that you caught it BEFORE the head broke off in the shifter; getting a broken-off one can cause a level of pain only achieved in Apache torture sessions.
Going forward, inspect frequently and definitely do so immediately if any sudden change in shifting characteristics is noted.

I'd be interested in knowing how you got cable out like that with the head still inside. Maybe pulled it out around the cable pulley? If you shift to the highest gear, the head of the cable will line up with the round opening in the slot(shown in your last picture) and the cable will come out.

A bit off-topic, but love those gear position indicators. I wonder why those didn't catch on and spread to the entire Shimano lineup. I have them on my 9- speed but not on newer 10- speed Tiagras, and I miss them!

Oh, I had a similar problem today, had me going crazy... I’ve put new cables in before, but this time it was the cable housing !
I was unable to shift onto the large chainring, 0.7 miles into my ride.
The top end of the housing was undone,& would not fit back into the ferrule. Later I noticed the housing was split further down.
I guess it’s best to leave the shifter on the handlebars. I ruined a cable by kinking it, lucky I had several spares.
