Recent RD indexing issues
I've never really had any issues with RD indexing over the few years I've owned my bike, however in the past week or so I've been struggling. The small cogs are noisy as if the RD is too far outboard, but at the same time the large cogs are noisy as if the RD is too far inboard. This is happening in both the big and small rings and it's driving me nuts. Any thoughts as to what might be causing this?

Hanger out of alignment. Something whacked your derailleur. You can either buy the alignment tool and learn how to use it, or take it to the shop and have them do it.

Most likely the hanger as posted above. Look at the bike from behind and the pulley cage should be vertical and parallel w/ the frame. If it's bent in or out or twisted at all it needs to be aligned.

Thanks guys, I wondered if the RD hanger might have been the culprit. Looking at the Park Tool gauge now.

Also check your shift cable for fraying, especially inside of the brake/shifters if fitted; it is much easier to fix before it breaks. You mention that you have had the bike for years, has any cable replacement or maintenance been done during that time?

Yes, I've replaced the rear shifter cables a couple of times, as recently as last fall. I'll check again though. Thanks!

I had started another thread but figured I would chime in here. After my bike tipped over in my house the hanger was bent. I straightened it and shifting was good. Then today I’m riding and hit a pot hole, all of a sudden shifting is bad. The RD now has too much play side to side. Probably has to be replaced. I asked the shop for two of them and I’m still waiting...so I suggest getting two of them as you never know down the road
