Chain skip mystery...
The other day my chain started skipping. Let me try to be brief here:
Replaced both chain and freewheel this spring...surely can't be worn in that amount of time.
Happens mostly in the middle chainring, but does as well in the big ring, just not nearly as much.
Middle Chainring was replaced within the last year or so, might be the issue, but I'm not confident there either as the teeth look ok, ie: they aren't "shark toothed".
So what then?? Could it be my derailleur? It's a friction shift, so it's not a problem with the indexed needing adjusted. And eyeing the derailleur, it's straight and in-line with the chain/freewheel cogs.
Could it be the derailleur teeth are worn? It's an 1985 Schwinn Passage, and it's the original part on there.
Thanks, I'm kinda stumped here right now.

Stiff link, bent/twisted tooth or link, outer chain plate coming off of pin, worn FW teeth, worn chain and other possibilities but these are the common ones.
A chain and/or cog can certainly become well worn in a year. It depends on how many mikes, how much power is at play, how well maintained the system is kept (dirt and lube), how much rain/slush, how many cogs get used.
A chain and/or tooth can be bent/distorted by poor shifting, chain suck, objects caught between the chain and cog.
Do any of these apply? We don't know. Andy

I just read an article talking about stiff links, so I'm going to check that. I haven't cleaned and lubed the chain in quite some time, so that makes sense. Also because the derailleur seems to be "jumping" forward which was said to be a sign of this.

Ok, so it was definitely stiff links. Which is great as that was a simple fix. And something new to learn as well. Thanks!
