Cannondale Road Warrior 600 Max Tire Size

Hi, All.
I have an older Cannondale Warrior 600 that currently has 700x28 road tires on it. There seems to be additional clearance. I’d like to put wider tires with some tread for rail trails and gravel paths. I love the frame. It has the energy and nimbleness of a road bike with a relaxed geometry and want to take it off road now. Does anybody know the max tire size I could fit on it. Theres not a lot of info on these bikes. It has a fair amount of clearance on the forks and Cannondale Delta All-Conditions brakes. Thanks for any help.

Bikes: 87 RockHopper,2008 Specialized Globe. Both upgraded to 9 speeds. 2019 Giant Explore E+3

You'll find variance in tires marked with the identical size.
You pretty much have to estimate and take your chances.

The best plan is usually to measure the tire clearance yourself. Tires do vary, but if you can slip a 4mm allen wrench between the tread of your current tires and the frame with room to spare, there's a good chance you could fit 700x32C. (You'd only need an additional 2mm on each side.)

If you have a friend with the size you want to try, borrow their wheel for a test fit.

Bikes: '83 univega gran turismo x2, '85 schwinn super le tour,'89 miyata triple cross, '91 GT tequesta, '90 yokota grizzly peak, '94 GT backwoods, '95'ish scott tampico, '98 bonty privateer, '93 mongoose crossway 625, '98 parkpre ariel, 2k'ish giant fcr3

another option is mark on the fork and stays where the tire/s would meet and take the bike to an o'reilly or such and borrow their calipers to measure the clearance. then all you gotta do is start another thread asking about certain tire sizes before buying

and start a religious war about putting wide tires on a 622-14 rim. 😁

Thanks everyone for the replies. I truly appreciate the help.

lol....that's funny! what i meant, though, was find some tires on the web and ask folks what the true size vs the stated size on the sidewall

Bikes: Too many. Giant Trance X 29, Surly Midnight Special get the most time.

The real answer is to measure, which you've gotten some useful advise for. That said, I googled the bike, and they look like pretty normal road calipers. I'd be kinda surprised if they fitted much larger--maybe 32mm at the most. I think it's likely that, while you can ride the terrain you describe OK, you'll never give our bike gravel-bike like traction.

Update: I found some Kendra 622-32's i took off an old Trek hybrid in my pile of parts and they mounted w/out any problems. cpach, thanks for the reply. I agree, 32's might be as big as I can go. I measured the calipers and they're roughly 10mm wider than the calipers on my CAAD 8. There might be a little room for something bigger, but I think 32's will be all I need. I'm not doing any competition rides - I just need something for weekend rides my girlfriend on local bike paths and some rail trails in the area. My road tires got a little squirrely in areas with new gravel and the extra width will stabilize the ride on that type of terrain. These 32's will fit the bill perfectly and they even soften the ride a little.

Thanks all!
