How to measure crankset?

From what points do you measure a crankset (crank length) to come up with 170mm, 172mm, 175mm? Also, I fell asleep during the metric system lesson during school back in the day - what's 170mm equate to in inches?
Thanks in advance!

Measure the crankarms from center to center. In other words, from the center of the hole that the pedal bolts in, and the center of the opposite hole. Do a search for metric to english conversions for the length in inches.
