Does the Ultegra ST-6501 faceplate just pop off?
I am always reluctant to pry something off when I don't know that it is actually a friction fit.
does the face plate from an Ultegra 650x shifer just pry off, pop off?
or is it held in place somewhere with a screw or bolt.?

Far as I remember they always had that tiny little screw right on the top that held them on. They did sorta 'snap' on but had the screw.

No screw on cover of the 6500/6501 versions of these. The cover just snaps onto the piece that is screwed on. 6510 had the 'chrome look' with the tiny screw.
Clips at the top & bottom, see arrows for location (below). Gently pry up and away to release, (top) or down & away, (bottom) with a thin flat blade. Just plastic so it may crack considering how old these are. Some say that the bottom point releases easier.

I've had issues getting mine to pop back on.
KEEP IN MIND THAT IT IS VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND A FACTORY REPLACEMENT PIECE. NOT EVEN E-BAY.

I have those on my main ride. In all the bikes I've wrenched on over the years, I won't be attempting to take anything apart on those brifters. I pull the cable, inspect, squirt lube, blow with air, knock on wood, and cross my fingers. Unless you are a mechanical Einstein I don't think they can be reassembled.

Rather than to pay extortion prices, I just put a piece of tape on each lever. Being that they are delicate, a replacement would probably break before too long.

finally screwed up the courage to plunge ahead (the small lever on this shifter is broken completely off and a cable is stuck inside so there really was not much to lose) and as reported above by KCT1986 that cover plate does pop off. I pried gently on the bottom. and POP!
Now I am going to delve deeper and disassemble it to see, for future reference, how I would get that cable out or if I can actually replace the small lever.
thanks again all.
