Newbie Question about gear/derailer settings

Hello..my chain will skip/switch back and forth between the last 2-3(smallest) rear sprockets while I am pedalling on the highest gears..is that just a cable too loose issue? I haven't had the bike tuned up since I bought it new this spring so I am wondering if it is just a stretched cable ...small town, no repair shop around..I bought a maintenance stand but don't want to start adjusting things and inadvertently make it worse..been there, done that..

It does sound like cable slack cold be a reasonable explanation to your issue.
A simple and low risk attempt at fixing it is to locate the barrel adjuster, turn it out, (CCW) by half a turn or so and see what happens. As long as you remember the number of turns and direction, you can always return the bike to the starting condition w/o having made things worse.
