Bike chain question - single ‘plate’?

I am trying to refurb an older kids trek single speed dirt bike. Starting with the chain. I don’t see a master link but one of the links does not have ‘plates’ on both sides. Only one. So (looking at it from above)… all the links look like this |:| and one looks like this |:

it doesn’t look like anything is broken off or anything. Is that the link I should take apart? What kind of chain is this?

Sounds like the master link with the side plate missing.

There are two common master link designs. Both have two "standard" side plates. One uses a added slide on clip outside of the removable side plate. The other relies on the chain's tension to retain the removeable side plate. But both have two plates. As mentioned I suspect that removeable side plate has been lost. Luckily that has an easy solution, get a new master link of the right size.

This is not a trivial issue, improperly assembled chain. If the bike has no other brakes (or if the rider can't operate the other brakes) and if the chain comes apart the bike and rider are not going to stop in a "nice" manor. Were a LBS send out a bike in this condition (improperly assembled chain) and if the rider had an accident there's a lawsuit in the making. Andy
