Shimano Claris To 105

Thinking of upgrading my Giant Contend4 AR groupset from Shimano Claris to 105 but only the drivetrain (cassette, chain, crank, derailleurs and shifters). The brakes are currently mechanical discs and I don't want to upgrade those. Will the 105 drivetrain be compatible with the Claris brakes?

Are the shifters still available for cable operated brakes? If not, you will have to upgrade the brake calipers as well.

I suspect that the cost of the upgrade will be getting on towards the cost of a new 105 equipped bike.

The cost of a 105 groupset less the (rim) brake calipers is about 550.00. Not sure if the shifters work with mechanical disc brakes or not though. I suspect they will.

For the shifters, if you can still source some R7000's mechanical STI's then there should be no compatibility with your current brakes

Missing from the above is the rear wheel, is yours 11 speed compatible? if not, budget for a new one, it's not worth trying to swap the hub.

Time to get yelled at. If I had to upgrade a claris bike I wouldn't want to spend 105 money, Sensah Empire Pro or maybe spend a bit more and go with Ltwoo's new hydraulic setup and also get new brakes while at it to make it more worthwhile.

You can also run the 11 speed 11-34T MTB cassette on that 10 speed freehub.

At Merlin Cycles the following 7 items total $515:

1. Shimano 105-R7000 crankset (50/34, 172.5 mm)
2. Shimano 105 FD-R7000 front derailleur (braze on)
3. Shimano 105 RD-R7000-SS rear derailleur: GS version $6 more
4. Shimano 105 CS-R7000 (11-28 or 11-32)
5. Shimano 105 ST-R7000 STI levers
6. Shimano Ultegra CN-HG701 chain (105 chain not in stock)

You may also want to upgrade the BB (Ultegra SM-BBR60); there is no 105 specific BB. Don't forget to include the cost of shift cables and housings to replace the existing worn ones.
