OK - was I just lucky?
I recently purchased my first 1X bike with a wide/narrow chain wheel (Salsa Journeyer w/ Microshift Advent). I changed the chain pretty soon after I got it (I have my reasons...) and simply installed the new chain. I did not pay any attention to clocking it. I have ridden it about 50 miles but haven't noticed any funny sounds or behavior. It's smooth and quiet. The bike isn't with me right now so I can't see if it's clocked or not.
Obviously a 50:50 chance of installing it correctly. If I hadn't, would I have noticed something obvious? Would the wide/narrow design kind of steer you towards getting the chain on correctly even if you were unaware that it needed to be?

it's possible some chainrings have teeth that are cut wider than others.
Chain is fine once put right.
