Save your front mech from the scrap pile!

Crunchy front mech movements can often be remedied by greasing the pivots. Unfortunately some front mechs exclusively use rivets, making the pivots unaccessible. By drilling out the rivets and replacing them with partially threaded bolts, the pivots can be maintained indefinitely. Drilling only took a few seconds, a punch was used when needed to eject what was left. For my suntour mech, 4 mm shaft diameter bolts fit well. Some pictures are included below. The bolts have not been optimized for length etc.

I've done that, & not just with bicycle parts that had rivets.

Fun fact: A bolt [what you used] has threads partially along the shank & is affixed using a nut/fastener, whereas a set screw will be threaded all the way to the hex head & the component it is screwed into will have the mating threads for securing in-place.

Swap out regular nuts for Nylocks, and the pivots will be virtually bomb proof!
