Hunting for an old Dura ace FH-7700 right side rear Cone

While checking out some Dura ace FH-7700 hubs I picked up recently, I have found I need to replace two of the right (drive) side cones (3A0 9803). I've searched but have yet to find any available. Just thought I would see if any of y'all might know a source. Fingers crossed, thanks!

Best hubs ever. I own a few sets, as well as the similar XTR units. The 7700 axle has the standard 10 x 1mm threading. These hubs take 9 x 1/4" balls - so this is all standard stuff. If you find any cone with roughly the same specs, including height, then it should work. The cone height doesn't have to be exactly the same, as you may be able to rig some spacers to approximate the original fit. Dust cap: ditto - don't be shy and play around to make it work.

Find yourself a bike Co-op and root around in their used hubs and cones bin. We have many pounds of this stuff.

I have a stash of older Shimano cones, I'll take a look but some have no part numbers so a photo would help. Andy

i 've found that buying used hubs on Ebay or CL, then salvaging the cones/seals/jam nuts is cheaper and easier than finding/buying new parts.

there's always a chance that a cone will be bad in the used hubs, but Ebay will help you get a refund, depending on the sale agreement in the ad... i've returned one rear hub out of ten or so bought.... it arrived loose and heavily greased...

all my CL purchases are in person, local.
i've taken one XTR hub open and inspected it in front of the seller... then handed it back to him... it was also "set loose and heavily greased"... i consider that a sign of trouble..the drive side cone was badly pitted... i didn't bother wiping off the second cone..

i once bought a rear wheel/hub for less than half of his asking price, that i opened up and showed the bad parts to the seller... i then helped him rebuild another wheel while i was there... i just wanted the RIM from the first wheel mentioned, And teaching someone HOW to properly rebuild a hub is worth the trip anyway! The hub i swapped out of the rim i wanted was later rebuilt too... he had moved washers around, put in a spacer from some wally world hub, and used the wrong type of seals and jam nuts to try and re-align the wheel to a Bent Swing Arm on his frame...

older generation NOS XTR and DA parts are SPENDY.
the first time i bought a used hub strictly for salvage parts was for DA 7400 series hubs...

As already mentioned buying a complete hub ensures that everything will match. The obvious donor is an WH-7700/7701 since they use the same FH body.

But there are a few pieces to this. If you look to mix and match you want the cone to be similar, (I'm not an authority on grind differences), and the dust seal to work. The FH-7700 seal is 214-0600. The FH-7700 DS cone dims are M10x13.2mm. The Ultegra FH-6500 uses the same 214-0600 seal and the DS cone dims are M10x13.5mm. Now finding an FH-6500 might be equally difficult.

You can get aftermarket cones from Wheels Mfg, but they don't offer one for you hub.

The FH-7700 uses a DS cone that is different from most Shimano hubs. It extends inward further past the bearings than most, (don't know if this serves a purpose), and is most similar to the XTR FH-M960/5.

Also, the rubber seal ring is different from prior Shimano FHs. These seal rings were different on each side (DS/NDS) and matches to the seal interface on the freehub body. The closest match for the 7700 would be the cones & seal on the other FH from the same era or slightly after. Possible candidates would be 6500, 6600, 5500, 5600 & 4400, and possibly a few others. You need to pull the tech doc and compare the part numbers for the seal ring.

Here is the tech doc for the FH-6500, that uses the same rubber seal ring. See #8 & 9.
Not sure if the more modern FHs that uses the one piece cone/seal ring/cover is the same size as the prior ones. Here is an example. See #5.

Chuck- I do have a number of various NOS Shimano rear cones in DA, Ultregra and MtB versions, including cones with the extended length past the ball track's small end. Here's the closest I can find to what is in the Ebay link sale (and is the RH cone still on the axle in that photo). IIRC the seal is located around a separate spacer between the cone and the lock nut (unlike most Shimano cones which have the seals assembled onto the cone's grooves).

Is this cone I have what will work for you? If it is and you PM me we can share info off public forum. Andy

Such are the challenges with C&V stuff. I had the same issue with a 7200-rear hub. A BF'r sent me a rear hub with a split hub housing with good parts. Saved the day.

This should work. The longer 'nose' on the original cone isn't an issue, as long as the cone is designed for a 10 x 1 mm axle and 1/4" ball bearings. Where the balls sit and travel on the cone is all that matters. As far as the rest of the dimensions, you can use spacers/washers to complete the fit, and hack around with rubber or plastic or metal seals to provide adequate sealing.

You need to check the seal size. The 7700, and FH of that era and slightly later, used smaller OD rubber seals on the drive side. The smaller seals were the same size as many Shimano front hubs.

See post #8 for the EV of FH-6500, which is somewhat similar. Also, lists some road FHs that use the smaller seals, some with seals on a separate spacer. Some Shimano MTB FHs of the same era as the 7700 had the same seals.
