Help with tapered steerer tube
First time dealing with a tapered steerer tube so please bear with me.
I want to swap out my crappy Suntour suspension fork for a rigid, suspension corrected mtb fork with a tapered steerer which I plan on ordering soon. Tapered steerer tubes are supposed to measure 1.5” at the crown but the tube on my fork is 40mm or about 1-9/16” wide, which is a tad wider than 1.5”.
Is this the standard?

generally the crown race seat has a slightly larger diameter then the rest of the steerer right above the seat.
Cane Creek's headset dimensional specs pages shows the 1.5" fork crown race seat to need a 39.75-39.85mm diameter. headset-identification-and-specification-guide.pdf (canecreek.com) Andy

Awesome, thank you!
So the crown race I pulled out of this fork should press fit most any 1.5” steerer …. .?

There are zero oddballs in cycling. Nobody has even done anything proprietary and weird ever. Everything fits together perfectly all the time with zero issue ever. I don't know what you are talking about
