Maybe the wheel was laced 4 cross originally?

While the wheel is hard to see with the background, it appears to be *at least* 3X, and based on the tangency of the spokes, I think 4X. (If that was the pic of the "old" wheel, or the matching other wheel.)

Some work to redo, but in the end, will be a fine wheel. You just don't see 4X as much these days.
