Giant Roam/Acera Triple set up problems

Saved from a dumpster, good shape save for a rusty chain. The front derailleur had slipped down. With chain off moved the derailleur up for big ring clearance. A visual check show that in the small chainring I am lined up. But when I move the shifter to middle ring the cage sits between middle and big ring. Push it again and it lines up with the big ring OK. What am I missing on this set up?

Cable too short? L and H screw stops set the position for small and large ring, but middle is determined by cable length.

leave some slack in the cable when the derailleur is in the small ring position, and the shifter is shifted to "1" position...

it may take a try or three to get it right, but that is what it takes... it is, quite literally, the ONLY way to adjust the middle ring Der. position.

i leave the cable adjuster on the shifter at one to 1.5 turns out from fully seated before any Fine tuning adjustments, then use the cable only to set the Middle ring position....... this reserves a bit in both directions to be used for the final fine tune, if needed
the stop screws set the low gear and high gear der. positions... the cable sets the middle gear position.

proper big ring teeth tips-to-der. cage bottom edge is 2mm or so(1/16" to 1/8" works ok. for the metrically-challenged)... are there any marks in the paint on the seat tube of the frame from where the der. was originally?

From your description, it MAY be that the FD is over travelling with respect to cable inputs.

Before doing anything else, eyeball where the cable is attached. If, for example the cable is attached on the inboard side of the pinch bolt, that changes the leverage and can cause over travel.

If the cable is correctly attached, and the lever and FD are properly matched, you might try trimming based on the middle ring, and using the limits to set inner and outer trim.

I'm not a fan of using the outer limit this way for motlre than 1mm or so because it can cause other issues, but you can try and see.

Got it. Will try cable adjustment on this. I peeled off the bashgaurd too. It was not helping see the alignment

sounds more like the cable is too tight.
