Axis length vs Axle

Hello everyone.
I'm looking to replace my rear wheel, how can I tell which axis length I need? The axle is M12 x 165mm / P1.5, but when I shop for wheels the axis are all much shorter. I guess I'm missing something?
Thank you.

The axle goes with the frame and the only the M12 matters here. You need to measure between the dropouts on your frame to determine what hub width you need. With a 165mm axle length, you probably need a 12 x 142 rear hub.

Thru-axle, quick release or nutted axle?

You realize there are a lot of other things you need to know too to ensure that new wheel fits your bike.

I think that's where they keep the WMDs, or the yellow cake, I forget...

Bikes: too many bikes from 1967 10s (5x2)Frejus to a Sumitomo Ti/Chorus aluminum 10s (10x2), plus one non-susp mtn bike I use as my commuter

Your conflating apples and pineapples.

"Axle length" depends on context. When shopping axles, it's the overall length. However, when shopping wheels, it's the OLD, or over locknut dimension or dropout width.

The difference is typically 10-11mm for QR, or about 30-40mm for nutted axles.
