ISIS BB Tool

New to the world of ISIS. Nashbar has a tool that claims to remove Shimano and ISIS. Are all ISIS the same in terms of removal tools? I'm looking to remove an FSA ISIS BB. Much thanks in advance.

The tools I see advertized as octalink type also swing with ISIS. The tool spline patterns are the same. Some of the older tools for the square taper shimano octalik cartridges don't always fit over the ISIS spindle.Be sure he tool has wrench flats on it,and the closer to the splines, the better.

I just had the runaround the other day with an older tool. It has the standard shimano splines, but was made for the square spindle, not the larger diameter ISIS even though they are both the same length. Be double sure you are getting one of the ISIS/Octalink type before you order it.

The nashbar tool I am looking at is a POS.Looks loke the FSA tool a guy had an issue with in a thread a day or 2 ago. If it's got no wrench flats and a hole thru the body for a bar for leverage,I'd pass.

Aside from compatibility issues I have not had any complaints with the Nashbar/Lifu tool I have. Almost 5 yrs and I have removed some seriously rusted units with it. Since it has a 1/2" socket on the end I can use standard mechanics tools like real breaker bars, or prefferably impact wrench(in extreme cases). The purely rotary force of the impact gun has removed easily the units the 5ft breaker bar wouldnt touch. No stripped threads yet.

My lifu has taken a real beating, literally. Has wrench flats as well as the socket, and the longer splines have gotten into recessed nondrive cups the park tool couldn't reach.

Whoa, hang on here - we all might be talking about two different things. Some seem to be talking about a crank remover, others a bottom bracket tool.

1. Crank remover - yes, often a tool (like Park) can remove both an Isis and Octalink crank from the spindle.

2. Bottom Bracket tool - used to remove the bottom bracket after the cranks are removed. Make sure the splines match the interface.

Capwater, can you verify #1 or #2 above?

2. I think we're on a BB thread. My Park crank remover works on both Octalink and ISIS no problem.

Do you ever sleep??!! Thank goodness you're around 24/7! Someday we have to discuss the origin of the term "carpet smoker". Just learned a new on the other day ... "glass cranker".

This doesn't really apply to you, but to answer your question more fully: No, all ISIS do not use the same removal tool. Truvativ ISIS uses a completely different tool than the Shimano and FSA. FWIW.

I have a TruVativ Roleur with the GigaPipe system, and the BBT-9 is the tool that they reccommend in the installation instructions. According to Park Tool, "The new BBT-9 Bottom Bracket Tool is designed to remove and install Shimano® Hollowtech II, Race Face® X-type, FSA® MegaExo, and Truvativ® Giga X-pipe bottom brackets".

Truvativ Giga Pipe is not Truvativ ISIS.

The Park tool for Truvativ ISIS is the BBT-8, I believe.

You young kids with your wacky lingo, re "smoking carpet".

OK, I think I follow, see: https://www.parktool.com/tool_indexes..._bearing.shtml.

The bottom bracket tool has nothing to do with the splindle interface. For example the Park BBT-2 removes bottom brackets with 20 splines, whether it's ISIS, Octalink or square. Likewise the Park BBT-8 can remove ISIS or non-ISIS, as long as it has 8 notches Thus, there is no correlation between spline style and bottom bracket removal - that was my confusion seen through the haze of carpet smoke.

The question now becomes: how many splines or notches are on the BB (regardless of ISIS/Octalink interface)?

Older park BBT-8 will not work on ISIS BB because of limited clearance for the spindle.
