I'm having a chainline issue that won't grant me use of my outer chainring on my 3x setup, is it more logical to replace the derailleur, or the BB?
I'm building my Raleigh Rockwood 29er as a budget friendly commuter beast that I can still sling around trails.

  • Measure the rear chainline in mm: measure the distance D between the dropouts, and L from the middle cassette sprocket to the axle locknut. The rear chainline is (D÷2) - L
  • Measure the front chainline: middle chainring to middle of the seat tube.
Those two numbers should be pretty similar. If not you can swap crank axles to get the front chainline closer to the rear. However that could affect the ability of the front derailleur to reach far enough in/out, or chainring clearance with the frame. If it seems wildly out the frame may be out of alignment.

I presume the FDER isn't reaching the large ring?
Have you backed out the H limit screw and tried?
Is the shift cable "tight enough". w no extra slack from a sloppy install?

How did the problem arise?

have you swapped to a different crankset or front derailleur??
if so, which one/s?
what is the bottom bracket width? both at the frame(68 or 73mm?) and the OA Spindle length?

Why do you assume it's a chain line issue? Have you eliminated all the other causes?

Was the cable recently replaced and attached to the anchor bolt's "other" side Andy

I'll add to this: is the cable correctly routed around/through its anchor and clamp? Just putting it on the wrong side of some part can cause problems with the geometry of the cable pull, so you need to apply extra force to get it to move past a certain position.

If it is a chainline issue, replacing the BB is going to work, while replacing the front derailleur probably won't.
