How much does that frame weigh?

I hear this quite often. Manufacturers usually haven't said. Manufacturers claims are often wrong or one weight is claimed for different frame sizes. There are different frame sizes in some models, obviously a taller frame is going to weigh more because the tubes are longer and some makers use thicker wall tubing to try to make their frame stiffer.

So post actual weights of bare frames (no parts) and oem forks.
Any type of frame, road, mtb, cruiser, kids, what ever. No snobby weight weenie postings of just the lightest frames out there. Lets see just how heavy cheap bikes are too. Lugged steel, welded tofu dreg, carbon, ti, cromo, gas pipe, etc.

It's not convenient to completely strip a bike just to weigh the frame so consider weighing frames when they are getting a full overhaul or rebuild. And there are many frame sets just hanging around. separate fork & frame for weights.

To allow for pressed in headset cups, subtract .13 pounds or 60 grams. No need to remove those just for the weigh in.

Report in pounds or grams or both.
Include brand, model, frame size, year if known, serial optional.

Really ? What exactly is the point in knowing what every POS 50 year-old bike-boom frame weighs ?

Especially since I doubt most of the old-farts could even provide a plus/minus "accuracy"of 4-6 ounces.

Aren't there much better uses of time and energy - such as actually going for a bicycle ride ?

Andrew R Stewart 03-06-26 09:49 AM

OK, I'll play. Not that any of my bikes are anywhere "normal" in their layouts. I have 3 unpainted frames and forks, all steel and fillet brazed. None were designed to be light weight with 0.6 and o.5 mid section walls in the main tubes.

Description #750 #150 #550

The lightest frame I have made was just over 3.25lbs, Columbus KL, minimal lugs and in a small size. That frame was classic tube diameters and flexed a lot, climbed like a beast but descended like crap as it shimmied badly. Were I to replicate the same goal today and used modern dimensions I would expect about 3.3lbs. for a truly rideable frame, and it would handle better than my long gone KL frame. Andy

Sorry for the confusing table of data. My attempts to align the columns isn't working.

Not bad; the new hardtail frame from State clocks in at 7.2 pounds (they didn't report the size, but from the pics M/L. I have a Niner hardtail that I built years ago and AIR the Scandium frame weighed about 2 and 3/4 pounds.

fork weight: 1.81 pounds
frame size:20"
wheel size:26 x 1 3/8"
year: ~1970 ( The date code on the Shimano 3CC hub is unreadable.)

someone drilled holes in the frame for internal routing of the generator wires so this frame is about 10 grams lighter than stock.
Murray bottom bracket construction. It has a clip that traps the down tube, seat tube and chain stays. The internal clip is held with a single weld. Looks like they added some putty to keep it from leaking. They notch the main tubes to make room for the other tubes. The chain stays are bashed in to make room for the bb cups. Head tube internal lug is a single piece for the top tube and down tube. Similar lug for seat post-top tube joint, note the top tube is tapered where it meets the seat tube. Looks like there was some movement where the down tube enters the bb. I've seen other Murrays fail there. Build it cheaper and faster!

Crack in the head tube. Lots of corrosion. Bike dismantled and the frame will go to metal recycling. "Get your nickel deposit back". At ~50 cents per pounds we're looking at about $2. FYI, Serpens is a constellation in the sky.

One of the best selling bikes from the past 20-25 years. This later model has larger diameter top & down tubes and the down tube has a little curve to it. Older models are all straight tubes, 1 and 1-1/8" diameters.

Reynolds steel frames have been made that weigh well under 4 lbs.

Cracked head tubes are not really uncommon to see if you work in a shop. Almost every one I've seen have been Al material.

While I'm no weight wienie I do fine the posts on not standard double diamond frames to be interesting, like the DaHan wannabie's. Andy

We've evidently come so far with precision manufacturing processes, that spec charts like this Merlin one from 2002 are no longer available

My Trek Emonda SLR circa 2022:

Frame weight: 640 g
Fork weight: 275 g

Rim brake version of course. Disc versions cannot come close to these numbers.

Those are interesting numbers, one of the extremely rare instances where the products weight is substantially lighter than the official weight used in their marketing and advertising.

Officially trek declared the weight of your frame at 698 grams unpainted and 760 grams painted. Fork was marketed at 381 grams.

Perhaps they were inflating the weight in preparation for the disc versions. The current equivalent Madone is marketed at 765 grams and the fork at 370 grams. But the new version is considered an aero bike with full internal cables and extra aero shaped materials. Things being equal a noticeably faster bike.

Let’s not mention other competitors such as the Aethos at 585 grams.

Émonda SLR RSL H1 Frameset - Trek Bikes

Emonda SLR H1: frame weight: 640 g. Fork weight: 275 g.

Disc equivalents, like all disc brake frames, are heavy and uncompetitive.

So unsure where everyone's numbers are from, unless actual weights at home of eg. 50cm size frame (vs 56)?
Your link says this in the specs:

It's a deranged form of "Gaslighting". The person in question provides a link to a frame whose official weight is nowhere near what is claimed, and the current replacement is listed as effectively the same weight. Yet, sticks to the narrative that disc frames are somehow heavier and non-competitive, even though the current replacement bike is a full Aero bike. A closer competitor would be the traditional non-aero Aethos, which weighs 900 grams frame and fork, plus or minus, depending on the steerer stack.

Never debates the facts yet repeats the same misinformation.

Dave Mayer 05-04-26 11:35 PM

The Emonda SLR RSL rim frameset weighs 640g. Specs here:

Émonda SLR RSL Frameset - Trek Bikes (CA)

The disc equivalent is 665 g, but the disc fork, because it has to overcome forces at the ends of the blades instead of at the rim brake crown, it has to be considerably bulked up. The relative fork weights are harder to find on the Trek website, for a reason.

Of course, this bulking-up renders the disc brake fork less flexible and less compliant. Perhaps one reason for the irrationally fat tires (>28) being spec'd for road bikes. Because the disc-specific fork absorbs less road buzz, the tires are forced into this role. Plus we all getting fatter.
