Sorry if my description is juvenile but I have never really worjked with an S-A hub before. Obviously something is wrong with mine because i turn the pedals and the wheel does not move at all. Before this happened the little chain link had broken off but I continued to ride the bike in the hardest gear. Until this weekend when my friend got on it and discovered the hub was no longer functioning.

Any ideas as to what happened?
Can it be fixed?

I know sheldon has a whole section on these things but not my question in particular. It may be a no-brainer but i obviously can't figure out what is going on. I'd rather not take the hub apart until somebody tells me that is what i will need to do. AArgh Thanks

Did you leave the shift pin in the hub or remove it? Did it sit for a while?
The hub is not complicated as long as you pay attention to the order and direction of parts, there are also a couple of pins that will just fall out depending on the direction the planetary is held so take it apart over a table. The last one I did with this problem had just gummed up to the point the ratchets were not dropping onto the ramps. But it could be a broken spring or even the shifting bar that pin threads into could have dropped out of position and caught on something.

Only remove the pin if you plan to take it apart. The piece it threads into can drop out of place. I was thinking that if you had pulled it out the shift pin might have dropped out of position while riding. I think you are going to have to take it apart to find the problem. They really are not that hard, just lay it out in order as you go.
