Just primer and clearcoat?
Hello all.
I'm painting my steel road frame. I used that brown Rustoleum "heavily rusted metal" primer to be on the safe side, but now I like the color of it (which I haven't seen a match for in paint colors so far) better than the goldish bronze I was originally going to use, and want to keep it.
So, is it alright to just use primer and a clearcoat, or am I asking for trouble?

You Know!? For Kids!
Sounds cool to me. The rat rod of road bikes. Do it. Red rims, white wall tires. Maybe even lay on some of those cool retro orange and white pin stripes or flame it and you are good to go.

As long as the top coat and primer are compatable I see no problem. You might want to do a sample on some old "huffy" tubes to see if the clear changes the primer's color as it will make it shinny. To see if it's still the color you want---sam

Unique Vintage Steel
I was planning on doing the same type thing with my schwinn traveler, but with black primer and then clear coat (of the same brand). Haven't had a chance to try it out, but as long as the brands are compatible I don't see an issue.

I'd use a few extra coats, properly dried and scuffed between applications. That way you can get a reasonably smooth finish.
