unthreading drive side bottom bracket cup
I'm working on a friend's giant mountain bike and it has a splined bottom bracket like a cartridge unit but it is actually not fully sealed and it has an adjustable cup (plastic) that uses a conventional lockring.
I'm having troube with the fixed cup side (drive side). I can't loosen the fixed cup despite using the proper shimano splined BB tool over which I'm using a 32mm 1/2" drive socket and a 24" quality breaker bar. I have to clamp the BB tool into the fixed cup with my spare hand in order to keep it from slipping out of the spline. To unthread to I want to turn clockwise or counterclockwise, I need to know before I mess this thing up. I've tried several times and the tool keeps popping off. I don't know if the fixed cup is locktited in place or corroded. I may just give up and reassemble from here but I would really prefer to get that fixed cup out so I can properly clean, then grease the threads and reassemble with the proper amount of torque so that my friend can later upgrade to a cartridge unit.
