SRAM PC-990 w/less than 9 speed

Any reason an SRAM PC-990 9 speed chain cannot or should not be used on 5/6/7 speed freewheel?

I have been experimenting with this myself. The problem I have run into is that the cogs used on lower-number freewheels/cassettes are thicker than the 9 spd units. This will prevent the chain from settling as easily onto the teeth, which can cause skipping under load. 8-spd chain, however will not have this problem, or at least not to the same degree.

I got three of these for $30. Figured I might as well try one. Installed one on my Raysport with a Superbe Pro crank and Shimano 6 speed freewheel. So far it is working very well, perhaps because the freewheel is a later model that is cut for smooth shifting. Shifting is crisp and precise. A longer test is being conducted. Whether it will work well on an old 5 speed remains to be seen.
