KMC Missing link

I have a KMC X9.99 chain which came with a missing link. KMC's site says the X9 is a 11/132 width chain. Looking on Amazon, the 9 speed missing link is 1/2 by 3/32. Or 1/132 wider than the chain.

The instructions said for one use only. So I assume after disconnecting the missing link, new parts should be used.

Will the 1/2 by 3/32 work fine with my X9.99 chain? Do I really need to replace the missing link after I open it?

Thanks

I've been using the same KMC Missing link for 4 months now and take the chain off weekly for cleaning and no problems with it. No tools required to remove it just the correct technique to take it off and when putting back on be sure to apply pressure to the cranks to set the lock again.

No reason not to reuse the missing link. I'm surprised the instructions say that, glad I've never read them I've reused my missing links many, many times (even on multiple chains) without any problems. The whole point of the missing link is to make it easy to remove the chain for cleaning... or so I thought.

SRAM also states that thier master link is only designed for SRAM chains.

Glad my Shimano chain can't read.

Hehe. I assume a lot of these dire warnings on chains are put their by lawyers trying to cover their company's asses.

I've done a lot of stuff to chains that probably is "not recommended" by the instruction. I've pressed out Shimano pins and put them back in rather than using the special replacements, I've reused quick links on the wrong brand, I've pressed the same pin in and out 5 or 10 times, etc. The only problem I've ever had was with an SRAM chain that popped a rivet, and the funny thing is that was a brand new chain which I hadn't even messed with

My 10sp road bike came with a KMC X10 10sp chain with a Missing Link. This worked great and was easy to remove. Then when that chain wore out I replaced it with a second X10. This time, the missing link was nearly impossible to remove. On installation, I had to use a needlenose pliers to get the plates to snap into the pins, and it was nearly impossible to get them apart again (I finally got it apart and replaced it with a Wipperman link).

So either I got a defective one, or they may have changed the design on the newer links to be more permanent. I would not consider the Missing Link on that particular chain to be removable without tools.

Thanks, I was hoping to hear that from several people.

I have been very haapy with the KMC chain, runs and shifts well.
