Motor oil is a great lubricant. Unfortunately, it's very sticky. The problem with bike chains is they need a good lubricant, but it should be as non-sticky as possible because the chain is so dang exposed, and it will collect dirt and dust quickly if you use a sticky lubricant.

Never do it. My friend uses engine oil to lub his chain. It ends up with black stains everywhere, on the chain, frame, wheel and his pants.:o
