Shot in the dark - Shimano Road brake parks?
I know that this is probably a longshot, but is it at all possible to get parts for shimano 105 (BR-5501) brakes? I'm looking to replace a QR on a front caliper.

According to the Shimano parts breakdown the quick release is part of the right arm. They don't list a part number for that arm or the right arm. They list part numbers for everything else but those two arms.

I just looked at a 105 dp brake and the qr has a cover plate with "Super SLR" printed on it. I also checked both a Dura Ace and an Ultegra brake caliper and they lack the cover plate but have small allan bolts (2mm and 3mm respectively) that hold the qr/cable clamp assembly in place.
So, possibly, the cover plate on the 105 caliper can be pried off to expose the holding bolt and that will let you remove the qr/cable clamp assembly. Where you get a replacement, I have no idea.

If you really want to replace it, your thought of waiting until you come across a trashed front brake (or rear brake; the q/r mechanism is the same) is wise. That'll give you grounding to figure out what's going on.

crypticlineage has it right with your LBS; if they have a trashed caliper in their junk box they might sell or give it to you.
