I'm searching for a Christmas gift for my mom. She is looking for an air compressor that can handle either schrader or presta valves for her bikes.

What would be nice is something possibly portable, cordless even maybe. She's having a harder time with her hand pump getting to 120 psi.

Anything someone might recommend?

I can't remember the brand, maybe Black&Decker, but I saw a cordless inflater that looked like a cordless drill. That would be just the ticket if she only needs to inflate her bike tires. There is another device that has a 12 volt battery and jumper cables that will start her car as well as inflate the tires. These are both made for cars so you would need the adapter from the bike shop.

I think the screw-on adapter will be unavoidable. At least I've never seen a compressor that could be used on a presta valve without one.

I found one like this for my wife. Sportsman's Guide used to sell it for about $25, IIRC. It looks a lot like a cordless drill or impact hammer, and uses a very similar rechargeable battery.

The one review says it's difficult to remove from car tires, but we've only been using it on bike tires, with no issues.

120 psi seems like a lot to get out of a portable.

a hard wired solution might be ok as well. First choice would just be cordless. Something small and easy to move around would be the key.

It's counter-intuitive, I suppose, but most of them claim at least twice that. The label on the handheld cordless that I wrote about above claims it will go to 260psi. I've never been brave enough to test that, but it does easily fill a 700x28c to 120psi in less than 30 seconds.

Negative. There are several that use that cam/compression method, Air Bob among them.

If you dont mind getting a bit creatie with a new compressor Topeak makes a SmartHead Kit that has adaptors and the smarthead (presta and shraeder in one) its like 20 bucks at local LBS. could replace hose on small compressor with this and be set to go. Or plumb it into the original line
