can someone explain gears?
If I buy a bike with 18 gears on it, and then the gears brake, will the bike then be the same as a 1-speed bike (like a bike without gears to begin with), or will it just be unrideable.
Sorry if this is a stupid question.

don't worry about replying, I reposted this in the gears section of the forum (which is what I should have done in the first place sorry) and have had some replies.

It depends on what breaks but I gotta tell you, modern derailleur equipped bikes are very, very reliable.
