8 speed Campy record parts

Hey folks: I am thinking about buying a 10 YO bike w/ 8 speed Campy record groupset. What troubles may I encounter with picking up parts for repair. Seems my bikes are either Shimano/Suntour 7 speed friction or shimano 9 speed index. Will 8 speed campy be a tough to repair? Thanks for your time, Charlie

8-speed Campy is obsolete and no longer supported effectively by Campy. Parts are either going to have to be sourced NOS through e-bay or cherry picked from Loose Screws or similar suppliers. It can be done but it isn't real easy.

There's still quite a bit of campy 8-speed parts out there, but like the other poster said it is obsolete. I have 8-speed campy record on my bike, but most of my parts were sourced from e-bay.

The bike will probably be very trouble free. Problem is, as the others mentioned, parts are getting hard to get and expensive. I am selling off all me old 8 speed Chorus parts, see my signature line. Nothing wrong with Campy 8 speed except rear derailleurs are getting hard to get. The first 2 parts I sold were the rear derailleurs. Brifters are probably the next most difficult part to get for reasonable money.

You can use a 9 speed campy rear der with 8 speed pulleys and it will work with campy 8 speed no problem. Have had to do it to many of customers bikes that other shops said they needed a new bike

You can use pre 2000 9 speed and it works just fine. Post 2000 is another story. The pull length is different. Post 2000 9 speed is identical to 10 speed except for the width of the spacers on the pulleys. The pulleys are actually the same. The spacers and screws are narrower. That leaves less space between the cages for the narrower 10 speed chain. Brandford bike bike has a nice explanation on their 8 speed upgrade page.

You could use the Jtek #1 on a Post 2000 derailleur to make it 8 speed compatible. Jtek said it works but for some reason they don't list it on their chart.

Whatever the case may be, good luck

Tim

Thanks a lot folks. If I buy the bike I guess I'll have to start looking for a few parts for future needs. What parts do you think would be smart to stock up on? As Tim said RD and brifters are hardest to come by. I would think rear cassettes will be easy to acquire. Thanks Charlie
